Stay-cation Anyone?

Since our current poll just closed, I thought I would ask about every one's vacation plans for this year. I see there is a great spectrum of where people are headed and would love to know specific plans and of course we will need pictures once you get back, hehe!

We will be moving to Michigan and having another baby so that's enough of a trip for me this year, so just sitting on the couch and relaxing together sounds like a lot of fun! I know.....I'm a loser!

Can't wait to hear about your plans and hear about your adventures!

This is the first summer that we're not moving in the last 4 years so we're so excited to have a real vacation...not related to a move, rotation or interview!

We're going to Florida and renting a house on the beach with another family...might be absolutely WILD, but I'm really looking forward to it :)

visit the grandparents (they all live within 45 miles of each other) for a week in May. Normally we go in summer, but Ed will hopefully be attending fellowship interviews this summer, and he needed to use up vacation days before June.

I long for the day when we can go somewhere new, but for now the kids miss their grandparents and I miss a couple of nights out without them with my husband. :)

I didn't get to answer the poll, but I obviously just took my vacation. :)

The rest of 2009 will be filled with med school and family related travel.

R's going to Miami in a few weeks for some conference (jealous! ...considering going with him but not sure I want to use 2 more vacation days...). Then hopefully in July and August R will be doing away rotations in the midwest, so (and here's where I need the vacation days), I hope to visit him during each. Hopefully December and January will then be packed full of ortho interviews outside of New York.

Now that B is practicing, he gets lots of vacation time, but he has to make sure he knows when he's going WAY ahead of time. We've already got three trips ahead of us. In two weeks, we're going to Chicago for ACOG's (American College of Obstetrics/Gynecology) annual conference. We're leaving our 2.5-year-old with my parents, so we can have five days to ourselves. ;) I plan on taking advantage of the hotel's spa one day, and we have reservations at a great restaurant already for dinner one evening. In July, we're renting a huge house on the beach in Charleston, South Carolina, with my husband's family. And, in August, we're spending 4.5 days in Indianapolis at Gen Con Indy, a great, huge gaming convention that we try to go to every year. Again, our son will be with his grandparents, so we get to be kids ourselves for a few days! Hubby reminded me that he still has some time to use, so we're thinking about maybe going to Seattle to visit friends and maybe even a cruise at some point. Don't know, but it's going to be an awesome summer!

This is our "only free summer" for who knows how long, so Minsu is doing an externship for a month and a hospital shadowing thing in June, then we are headed to South Korea to visit the family from July - August! Thanks, Uncle Sam!

My brother is getting married, so I'll have to find a sitter so I can fly in one day and fly right back out the next. (I'm in MI, the wedding is in NM)

And, if I feel motivated to take my kids to California by myself, my family is having a 'camping on the beach' reunion. We do that every few years. I don't know if I have the mental capacity to handle flying across the country with 3 kids and then not have a coronary while camping on a beach. I have a severe "my kids drowning" phobia.

So, sadly, any vacations I take will not include my husband. Though I'm really hoping our house sells and he can take off long enough to help us move.

we are moving back to central texas (austin), so hopefully we can swing a beach trip this year. we have to take advantage of being closer now. our child may not know snow from now on but she is GOING to know ocean (not nice ocean but still). also, looking forward to introducing her to the foreign concept of hiking. a fav. past time for me.

Jeff gets one week off after boards and before rotations, so we're going to stay at a condo that my aunt owns (free rent) in Colorado and then stop by his hometown for part of a family reunion (but he starts rotations, so we can only be there for the weekend). We're pretty cheap, so we're not doing anything too big or going too far away!

We went on our vacation between Christmas and New Years (Drew's only two weeks off during his third year). With airfares near $600 and desperate for warm weather we drove with his parents down to Florida and stayed in my parents house. It was a super nice time while we were there but I will NEVER do that again - 4 days in the car for 4 days in the sun wasn't quite worth it! We're waiting on Drew's 4th year schedule to see if we can FLY to Florida next year and again stay at my parent's house. I am also hoping to tag-a-long on an interview or two, but that might be cost prohibitive! Someday I want to go somewhere different; but for the next six years (or more) I think staying at my parents place will be the vacation that fits our budget!

We got back yesterday from our trip to Boston. We took a week (sans kiddo) to visit our good friend that is a PGY3-Psych. Talk about fun!

I'm sure we'll take a mini-trip to Chicago, mainly because our daughter is begging to ride the train. Hubs can't get off for my family's beach trip, so we're going to go without him.

Other than that, I'm pretty excited to be staying close to home!

Alexandra, where are you moving in MI? We're at UofM-Ann Arbor

WOW! It sounds like there are a lot of fun times ahead for many this summer/year, have a great time everyone!

Christy- we are moving to Muskegon which is on the west side of the state, right on the coast. Very exciting stuff!

For anyone who wants a low cost vacation: Santa Claus, Indiana has an incredible water park gret for the youngest on up. It's called Holiday World and was rated cleanest park in the US. http://www.holidayworld.com Drinks are free, sunscreen is free, and food is cheap. Lots of places to sit and see from all directions (a must for young moms).

Another good option is Indian Boundary Campsite in the Smokies http://www.recreation.gov/welcome.do?topTabIndex=Home with lots to do nearby. If you go off season, you can even rent a beautiful cabin for a song. It's not far from Dollywood and Gatlinburg either, so you can catch a show and ride go-carts.

Like to do something educational? Fairborn Ohio is home to a free airforce museum where kids can climb inside of space cabins and airplanes http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil. The gift shop sells freeze-dried ice cream. During the summer a huge air show takes place at airport. http://www.usats.org but get your hotel early. Go a little further south and enjoy a Cincinnati riverboat cruise.

If you're not into hot summer vacations, consider visiting Mackinac Island, in the upper end of Michigan. You can rent a place and enjoy great food and lots of nature. No cars are allowed on the island. This visit is a bit more expensive, but fun. Be sure to check out the famous Grand Hotel http://www.grandhotel.com/internetspecials.html.
