Anyone other MS4s...

a complete wreck? I am sick to my stomach and crazy worried. I am suddenly questioning every phrase and word in my husband's application!

(Tomorrow is September 1, the first day you can submit residency applications - and for most competitive specialties it is important that you sumbit them on the first day!)

well... I too was a nervous and also a hormonal pregnant mess. So relax, and realize that his residency will work itself out, one way or another. There are way too many uncontrollable factors for you to worry about anything too much at this point. My husband occasionally wonders still how he matched into his first choice for ortho...the odds were against us. Take heart in the fact that everything will fall into place, one way or another, regardless of how much you worry about it. It helped me when I understood how little good my nerves were adding to the situation. Hang in there!

You know, I am ready. I think that Justin (and I) has really done an excellent job getting his application ready to send out. I really want it to go out today, but we are waiting on one last Personal statement review...39 programs, and I am just ready for the "fun" to begin!

Hi,
I'm right there with ya! My hubby is a MS4 and I'm more worried than he is about making sure the residency application is PERFECT! The entire process has me quite anxious, as I think about what will happen on the dreaded 'match' day almost daily. All I can do is keep my faith and hope for the best. I know my hubby is qualified and will do very well; I just want that 'day' to get here SOON! Hang in there :)

I was, but now I have totally calmed down about it. He wants to do ortho which is super competitive so the goal is to get it all out by Thursday or Friday. No way it is happening today...we are still tweaking the personal statement.

I agree, Stephanie. Do all you can and then put it in the Lord's hands. Having said all that, when we were MSIV, I was a mess until the match. But, looking back now, I can see how the Lord was in control of the situation. I wish I had been less uptight and freaked out, but there is no way I would have listened to that advice back then. LOL!

I was in the same place as you were a year ago, and just like everyone says, things have a way of working themselves out. Stephanie was right when she said their too many things out of our control, so don't waste so much energy on worrying about it (although I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to take my own advice a year ago!). We went through the whole process and ended up matching at our 2nd to last choice. My boyfriend was devastated at first, but we changed our attitude and moved across the state and are just taking it one rotation at a time. Sure, it's not the route we would have wanted, but we still have all the really important things: each other, our girls (dogs, really!),our jobs and no matter where he does his training, he'll still come out a surgeon.

I look back on every application/transition with amazement. We didn't go to our first choice for residency, but we weren't there for a year before realizing that we were EXACTLY where we needed to be! It all works out. God is sovereign and powerful, but most importantly all-loving, and He will put you in precisely the right and perfect place for both of you.

But the waiting sure does stink! Hang in there and eat some ice cream. That always helps. :-)

We are applying to otolaryngology residency programs and will be late, make that very late, in sending in our applications. The odds are definitely against us but I have confidence in my husband and I'm sure that he will place somewhere, if not at our top choices. I've come to terms with the reality that we may be leaving Boston but home is where the heart is..or residency program is :). Good luck to everyone.

I was informed not to call him an ENT..."would you call a cardiologist, heart," he says. "Well I would if there were less vowels that I had to master," my response. But yeah for ENT.

Well, you could always go with ORL, but try explaining that to people. ;o) I find people respond better when I say ENT. If I say otolaryngologist, they look at me like I'm speaking Greek. I am kinda sensitive to the 'snotty doctor's wife' stereotype, so I try to not overwhelm people with the big terms. People want to feel like they can relate. But, that's just me!

I am new here! And not blogging currently... trying to find a way to balance my "real" life and "internet" life... okay that really doesn't sound like it makes sense! lol

Anyway - I think more than the application process I just want match day to be here. I say that to myself every single day. For now - there is just so much up in the air business.

You don't know HOW happy I am that I have found this site!!!!

Anon, Brad just told me that exact same thing, using the cardiologist as an example too. LOL! I guess it is okay as long as you put 'doctor' on the end. So, yay for ENT doctors! ;o)

Thanks for the comments ladies - I didn't read most of them until now because I was so frazzled yesterday... I couldn't stop reading and rereading the stupid application and finally just asked my husband if we could submit it so I could stop going crazy! I feel much better now that they are IN - I think that having the responsiblity of looking over it is what made me crazy - now I feel better because they literally are OUT OF MY HANDS! Letting go and letting God (but I am sure I will have many freakouts before March 18th).

Marissa - I told my husband the same thing! We got his all in yesterday. He kept calling me asking me to read over stuff one more time. Finally I just said, "We have to turn this thing in! It is freaking me out! I keep looking at it..make me stop!" haha Relief!

I was talking to my boyfriend last night (I don't know all the deadlines for things because he doesn't always keep me in the "know" on these things, and I am kind of learning as I go here). He was like "Well I think there is a deadline coming up here..." UMMMM YES!
Geez.... I will talk to him about it again tonight when he gets home.

Oh,I am feeling the application nervousness. I have been dating my MS4 for 2 1/2 yrs now and am just starting to realize what he is going through. He has managed to remain very calm up until this point and his anxiety is only making mine that much worse. I have read all the stories and I have realized that we aren't going to be able to stay were we are. I support him whole-heartedly and am so afraid of him being disappointed on match day! (He's think neurosurgery)

Anon - what do you mean he is "thinking" neurosurgery? It is an extremely intense program and you have to be on board with the decision too! It took us months to decide whether or not to do it because it is SO demanding. My DH is on his second of three away rotations for NSG right now. Email me - I'd love to talk to another significant other who is applying to NSG! marriedtoamedicalstudent at gmail dot com!
