Intro: Julie

Hi everyone!

My name is Julie and I am married to a first year orthopedic surgery resident. I met my husband when we were freshman in college, and I must say that being a doctor was the furthest thing from his mind. He was an athletic training major and was having a good, stressfree time. After we graduated, he began working for an orthopedic surgeon as an athletic trainer. It was then that he began thinking about becoming one himself. I was so young and dumb (j/k) that I actually encouraged the idea and helped him take the necessary prerequisite courses and fill out the applications. The good news was that he got into medical school. The bad news was that I would be leaving my friends and family to go with him. We moved and got engaged at the end of his first year. We married at the end of his second year. It was insane because he took his boards on June 26th, we got married 5 days later and 4 days after that he started his third year (rotations). He is now in the middle of his first year of residency and I am a little freaked out b/c I have heard that 2nd year is even harder (How can it get harder? He works 100 hours a week now!).

I am a teacher and have a lot more free time on my hands then he does. I think this drives my husband a little crazy b/c I am always planning things I want us to do together and he is never around to do them. It has been really hard on both of us, but I am trying to be more supportive. I am so glad that Bea (thanks!) told me about this board. It feels so good to know that there are others out there dealing with the same issues that I am. I look forward to getting to know everyone better.

Julie

Hey Julie! So glad you found us. Yes, they say it gets easier, but I keep waiting for that. I've never heard of 2nd year being harder, but it wouldn't surprise me either. ;o)

hate to tell you ladies, but it doesn't get easier for a long time. On the bright side though, the hard times provide an opportunity to grow closer to each other. The stress and constant demand can seem like a real downer, but some day he'll look back and have a chance to appreciate your sacrifice. I've made it through to the other side... the grass really is greener.

Hey there! My husband is a first year general surgery resident... they tell him next year will be the hardest too. For some reason, the 2nd years get the priviledge of taking most of the call. Lovely!

Medicine was also the furthest thing from Kyle's mind in college. He graduated with a journalism degree. :)

Glad you joined!

Welcome! My husband is an R2 in ortho. Unfortunately, R2 has been much harder than intern year. The hours are not worse, it's just that they are expected to actually know ortho stuff and do surgeries on their own so that makes it more emotionally challenging. It's not the same at every program so maybe it won't be so bad for you guys.

Nice to *meet* you. :)

Sounds like the ortho horror stories are true! We start the residency application process this summer. (yipee! [/sarcasm])

Ditto to what Kathi said! It may not seem like there's an end to it, but believe me, there is, and it's all worth it. Glad you found us! I wish I'd had this kind of support when I was in your shoes!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!! I know that it is a long, tough road, but I do have faith that in the end it will all be worth it. I feel especially better knowing that I can come here and talk with all of you!!

Ginny, I would be happy to answer any questions that you or your husband have about ortho. It is def. a challenging residency that's for sure! I will try not to scare you too much though, I promise :-).

Joz1234, I teach first grade (the little guys). I mostly love it, but like all jobs, there are those days where you wish you were someplace else.

Goodness, I am the wife of a Orthopaedic Surgery Intern (well, one month till he's a 2nd year resident)....I've been preparing myself for next year being one of the worst. We don't have kids, however I'm a nurse (rotation schedule) so we go days at a time with out seeing each other sometimes. Any venting, advice, whatever is always appreciated!!
