There's No Place Like Home, There's No.....

So I have a question....for those of you who have relocated to a fun new location for residency(or not so fun), what are some important things you learned along the way that you wish you would have been told before your move? Is there anything about moving in itself that you would recommend or something you wish you had done when you got there or before you left home? Is there anything totally unexpected that you had to deal with or something funny that happened that the group might benefit from hearing about?

We are just about to move from Tulsa, OK to Muskegon, MI, a town that I personally have never seen. I don't like the cold, so I'm not really excited about where we are going but I am excited about the new adventure we will have in this town, the great experiences we will have together, and all that Tom will learn at his new job!

I was completely overwhelmed when we moved here. I had no family, no help, Brad was constantly working, I am slow to make friends, I had tons of unpacking to done, and I just had a complete mental breakdown. It wasn't a fun time. But, that won't happen to you ladies, because there is a support system in this blog. I wish I had it way back when...

I am not sure which is making me more nervous, staying in MI without Brad or moving to Philly. I'm scared silly of big towns and I get soooo lost in the chaos. But being here without him is pretty much the pits. So, I will suck it up and make the best of my time in Philly. It will be an amazing opportunity to experience US history and the east coast feel.

Doc's Girl said...: I spent 4 months in Minnesota with J for an out of state rotation. We both were not entirely thrilled about going--our rotation was in the dead of winter where it was like -40 outside. :(

But, the best advice that I can give you about going to a new place is to get established quickly. Especially with kids, getting a routine going is so important. I would get some phone numbers of the other doc's wives (usually they are all from out of state, too, so you will relate to them) and see what they can recommend...or even try to meet some new people at church, if you go. Because you guys are going to be there for a couple of years, it's so important to know your surroundings...so you don't feel like you're in completely unknown territory. That is half the battle in fighting homesickness... Keep in touch with family...and just know that this is not forever. In fact, it'll go by so quick--I can't believe that J is going to be done with residency next year! WEIRD!!! :)

I volunteered at the same hospital, volunteered outside of te hospital, and spent a lot of time with the other doc's wife and children. Not only did it make the time pass, her and I got along so well...and became another person that I could talk to at the "semi-snobby" dinners. :-P

For me, getting adjusted in a new state was a very cool experience...and made me realize that J and I do fine where ever we go. :-D

So if you have any questions about the city, like where to live, etc I'd be happy to help you out. FYI, there are some places in the city you definitely do NOT what to live!
