Does the year matter?

I'm just curious as to the year you thought was the hardest. I've heard 1st yr, intern yr, PGY2... I'm just wondering what your thoughts were on the hardest year.

It's gotta be different for everyone I bet. For us, it has been this first year of residency, by far. Kyle tells me next year will be eve nworse with call. Yee-haw!

Surgical intern years are T.O.U.G.H.

You mean not ALL the residency years are bad? I wouldn't know but what I have heard is pretty consistent with Melisa's comment - sometimes I really wish DH had a facination with skin rather than the OR and the brain!

I can't say for sure since we are only PGY2, but word on my end of the street is that it does get easier - at least easier than intern year. Not that that is saying much...

I tried to talk Brad into derm. It was a no go. Boy wanted an OR and nothing else would do. But I have to tell you, the fact that he loves it makes the biggest difference in the world. He is truly happy there and it has been worth every sacrifice. :o)

Oh, great. My husband is sort of interested in surgery. Eek... Anyway, we are only MSI - and so far, it has nearly killed us, not to mention the marriage. Second semester is better. What family life?

I will post my intro soon!!!

I'm sorry it has been so tough! The good news is that once you get into "the groove" you get used to the insanity and it doesn't seem so bad anymore. The first year is such an adjustment. I don't think I got my groove until the 3rd year though. Not that it is easier, but your perception changes.

I think we're starting to get into a groove. I just accept the fact that he is going to be home from 1 am - 7 am most days, and that is it. Lower expectations are the key. I swear the stress makes him hormonal sometimes, though... :p That's MY department!

Well, so far in medical school the 1st year was the worse for us, hard classes, bad tests, and long hours. Now that Tom is doing rotations and we are almost at the end of school, I'm so curious to see what a schedule will look like for residency. Our program took 4 OB residents this year instead of their normal 1, so I'm hoping we will be living a life of ease, hahaha, but I'm setting family time expectations low, so hopefully I might be happily surprised!

everyone I know agrees that intern year is the worst. I always joke that it's the reason I waited 'til the very end of intern year to meet S (now PGY3). I've been told each year is easier than the previous. I am fully expecting this year to be easier. On paper, so far, his schedule looks great (he's in the PC program, so it's a lot of ACR), but I'm worried about what will really happen when he starts moonlighting...
