Is your DrH considering a fellowship?‏

Forgive me. I have fellowship on the brain. :o)

Well, there are new rules now that radiology residents don't take their final boards until a year AFTER their residency is done. Seeing as how no one wants to hire a radiologist who hasn't yet passed his boards, fellowships are becoming the norm for radiology... unfortunately. So, FIVE more years for us!! Hopefully we can just do his fellowship in FL where we already will be, but who knows. :)

Good luck with the fellowship match coming up, Melisa!

Really? That stinks! Don't lawyers do something like that? I always questioned the logic of that method. What are they supposed to do for a year?

Thanks, Hannah! I'm sure everyone will be excited for me to stop talking about it. LOL!

Yes, he is... We spent all spring traveling the country for interviews. And in two weeks we find out whether he matched or not... So scary and exciting all at once!

Not at this point but who knows since we have 3 more years of residency and Fellowships are becoming more common for EM residents.

Good luck for those in the fellowship match!

It is a scary and exciting time! I have to say, I wasn't entirely sold on my DrH's second fellowship, but now that he's got less than a month left, I look at all he's accomplished in the past 2 years and it makes me incredibly proud. His book chapter in one of the leading textbooks in his field is going to press as we speak, the experimental procedures he's been trained on have been featured in the news, he's been invited to present his research nationally. None of this would have been possible without the second fellowship. I see how happy he is for his accomplishments and how he is bursting to share the details of his day with me when he comes home. This is the happiest he has ever been during his training, even though the hours have not let up that much. Once they find their passion, you will reap the benefits all around.

My husband is just starting his 2nd year of a 3yr neonatal fellowship. I have to say that fellowship is MUCH BETTER than residency! He only has a certain number of calls each year and he has whole months where he does research and has a basically normal schedule - it is great!

The light glimmers at the end of the tunnel of hubby's two year fellowship. But here's advice to those still at it: know where you want to go and apply to those states in advance for licensure. It takes a long time and even if it doesn't, credentialing does take a longer time and NO ONE GETS PAID UNTIL THEY ARE CREDENTIALED. So save up. The lean times are not over just yet.

My husband will definitely be doing a fellowship. He's just finishing up his PGY-1 year in ortho, so we have a long time to go still until we get to the fellowship point. We're pretty excited about the fellowship year as we consider it to be our "adventure year" where we hope to explore living some place totally different (a big city, different region of the country, or a really warm vacation type of place). We figure it's just one year, so why not spend it some place totally different than where we've been and will end up.

Not really...sorta...it came up once...who knows. We have 3 1/2 years of ortho left, so we'll see!

BTW, what happened to the cool quote in the blog header? Something like..."Love this moment. This moment is your life." I -loved- that quote!1
