Feedback please

I've been stewing over an idea that I'd like some feedback on. I'd like to find a way to let the people in each specialty have a place to get together and talk. That is a lot of specialties and a lot of situations. Obviously, I can't do it all. I need lots of volunteer help.

My first thought was to have pages on this blog that you could go to and chat, but the extra Blogger pages are for info, not for posting.

My second idea was to have separate blogs, but heaven help me, I can't keep track of 15 more blogs. Preferably volunteers to run the blogs would have experience with their DrH in that specialty, ie a resident or attending. Does that seem reasonable?

Here are some specialties/situations I've come up with. What more should we have?

Medical School
Residents
Attendings
OB/GYN
ER
Radiology
PM&R
Anesthesia - Brittany
Internal Medicine
ENT
Ortho
General Surgery
Family Medicine
Pediatrics
Psychiatry
Opthomology
Urology - Rachel

A big concern I have is that by specializing so much, this blog would become obsolete, which would make me sad because I think there is strength in numbers. I am hoping the specialty blogs would be a place to ask about programs, lifestyle, etc. Hopefully, the moderators of these blogs would come and post here and let us know if there is a great discussion going on over there.

What are your thoughts? Too much work? Not worth it? Sounds useful? It would ruin this one? You want to help?

What about a facebook fan page for the blog? Then you could use the discussions tab so people could chat back and forth. And maybe we could even have a list of where people are located.

I really like the idea. It sounds a lot like a forum. Not sure how to make it happen, just wanted to lend my thumbs up.

like dicey said that sounds like a forum setup, which wouldn't necessarily make the blog obsolete.. It will involve more work to moderate and to make sure people are only discussing specialty stuff in the respective specialty area.

You can install phpBB pretty easily (as long as your webhost has a sql db you can set up)

I think Allyson has a great idea, a facebook fan page can be used for specializing & this blog can focus on the issues that apply to the community as a whole. Just my 2cents... (I just started following by the way- my Fiancé is getting ready to start PGY-2)

I think a facebook page would be a great idea! It would make it really easy to ask questions and get answers back quickly (as long as you have a facebook page yourself).

I made a group instead of a fan page. Which is better? It is closed right now, so let me know if you want on. Maybe we'll open it later. Maybe we'll test it before it gets opened to the public. Maybe it never will. Who knows...

IMHO, facebook is the way to go. The discussion boards will be useful for this topic, plus you have minimal maintenence.

Just to be picky here, Psychology is a PhD. Psychiatry is the Medical Degree.

Thanks, Christy!

I don't see how the FB discussions would help the specialties find each other, but I'm open to learn!

Well, I think the main difference in a group and fan page is - Do you want more people? with fan pages, you'll be able to find more people and with a group it's closed (right??)

As far as specialties, we could just make one big list under the discussion tab.

I joined but haven't had a chance to look at the page yet.

I tend to never look at facebook pages. I do love my canon photography forum and I forum I frequent at church. It has different sections and places for people to meet up. I was actually thinking I wanted to start one, but I am too lazy. I frequent the ortho gate one. It is a forum for ortho residents, doctors, and med students wanting to go into orthopedics. I think it is the best way to do what you have described. They never work very well with blogs or facebook.

I'd be on board as a moderator for my hubby's specialty since he will be an attending next month. I don't know if there are many urology wives out there though.

Thanks, Rachel! Do you have any idea how to set up forums or would you want to do it on Facebook, or start another blog???

I'd be willing to moderate or own an anesthesia page. I agree that I would prefer to do a new blog or forum as opposed to a FB group. I think separating the specialties is a great idea but we should keep this blog for larger issues or just as older getting a chance to talk with younger :)
