Post residency

Have any of you who are past residency find that anything changes?
Because financially of course it does but I mean emotionally, time wise. I feel that my husband is even more busy now we see him less he is attending now so he is always on the phone before when his shift was done he passed the pager but now the patients are his own and so he is responsible 24/7. He hasnt had 1 day off since September! Yes, I am driving a nice car and carrying my stuff is a Louis Vouitton now but I still dont have a husband!!!! Im sorry if im ranting, kinda sucks to be so angry on a Monday morning.

Please read my blog. I'm the wife of an attending. A Chief. You get the picture...

Email me at yourdoctorswife@gmail.com if you really want to pitch a hissy. I'm down for that type of therapy.

Low expectations on your husband's free time is a key to happiness. I decided years ago to be grateful for any time he could be with us rather than resentful for the (large amounts of) time he couldn't. I'm glad my husband gives good care to his patients, and know he would often rather be with us.

I feel the same way, if he doesnt have patients decide to walk into his clinic at the LAST Minute (yes they close at 5 but that doesnt mean you should walk in at 459), he is wrapped up working on clinic notes, or attending some sort of meeting through the hospital. I have learned that i'll never be able to time dinner so that its hot when he gets home - and to be patient when his pager goes off or the call service calls his phone while we're out somewhere. Its definitely frustrating, i rant about it on my blog quite frequently - but its a package deal. Now, if i could just find some patience for his narcassistic tendencies post residency we'd be in great shape!
Well wishes from one doctors wife to another

Girlfriends will get you through it- I swear. Having a local wives chapter is the way to go. Some call it book club. We call it wine night.

Hi, I'm new and my husband is premed. You could say I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum. My husband works 40 hrs and is taking 18 units. He is still in his sophomore year. He wants to be an orthopedic surgeon. I never see him other than during his late nights doing homework. Is this something I'm headed for?

I have survived residency and fellowship and now my husband is gone M-F to a small underserved community providing a much needed service, so we only see him on the weekends and I have 3 kids under 3 at home. Needless to say I miss fellowship and residency, we sure did see him a lot more then. I guess we have just learned that the weekends are sacred, we all get to be together and cherish the moments we do have. I have learned to put my big girl panties on during the week and enjoy the luxury of now being able to afford a handy man and a lawn guy to compensate for my husband's abscence. I chose this life, so now I have to learn to enjoy it!
