2012

I'm new. Hi! Married to a path resident, three kids. My question is, are any of the rest of you worried about what the 2012 Medicare changes mean to the future of husbands' careers? I almost try not to think about it, because pathology is predicted to be hard hit.

Eva-
Not particularly, mostly because I've learned that you kind of just have to learn to roll with the punches--especially having married into this career choice. Unfortunately, if things do change for the worse, we (and our families) will likely just have to adjust to the new circumstances. Keeping a positive attitude helps keep me from becoming overwhelmed and also, remembering that everything happens for a reason--whether we can see it at this point or not. One other thing that helps me keep a positive mindset is remembering that there are a lot of people in life who have been given a lot less than I have. I have a husband, a fully-functioning body (for the most part), a roof over my head, and food to eat. I have family that loves me, and friends that help support me. All else is simply the "fluff."

I hope you have a beautiful Christmas!

Yes, we worry about it all the time. I live in Texas and am active in TexPac and TMAA. I attended my first conference a month ago. I take a more offensive approach at this. My goal is to help TMA to do what they can to prevent the rate cuts to medicare. They are also actively working on making sure our legislatures understand the impact that SGR has. Yes, ultimately we have to deal with what happens, but what you need to realize is that the people making these decisions are very uninformed, and we can have a huge impact by educating them. This is what TMA (Texas Medical Association) does. If you live in a different state, I'd suggest looking into whether you have a state level medical organization that fights for physician's rights.

There is also AMA at the national level, but they are currently having a rough go at it since they did not do the best things for doctors when it came to Healthcare reform. They only speak for about 12% of doctors, although they have new leadership and are trying to rework themselves.

You have to become his eyes and ears. You have to learn as much about the changes coming down the line in healthcare and share what you learn with him. I know you are busy, but so is he and he does not have the time to do the research. SGR is a big deal and as someone else posted, those in control are very uninformed. Look to your local Medical Society, Medical Alliance, AMA, form a local group of other physician spouses dedicated to researching the web and other places for information. Then find a way to share with your spouse and others. You will be fine...just don't do nothing.

does anyone know of a petition or some sort of group that can be linked and can allow for easy participation? If so, please share!
