Poll - Do you receive additional income?

New poll is up. I thought med school was tight financially, but residency is even tighter! I wish Brad could start moonlighting. That would probably help! LOL!

I choose "Hospital Commitment." Not sure if it's the right category but hubby, who is an intern, can do extra H&P's for admits on top of his usual work and gets paid a minimal amount for each. If it's an easy pt it can take 5 min. If it ends up being complicated it can take up to an hour. But at least it's a little something we didn't expect.

Melisa,

Have you heard about the proposed changes to duty hours...If passed Moonlighting will be included in the 80 hour max work week. Which means I am guessing programs will not allow it anymore. You can read more at the ACGME website!

I work full-time and we use a little student loan money for his extra school expenses. We also get gas and grocery money from his Mom even though we tell her we don't need it, she insistes... I think she feels sorry for us. Either way, we appreciate every little bit we can get.

Jaidi - EEK! Thanks! I'll check that out! I reposted the poll to allow for multiple answers, so revote if you need to. :o)

Melissa along with the moonlighting changes, they are also trying to drop the max hours for a PGY1 down to 16 hours at a time. While it would be nice if Justin only had to work 16 hour shifts at most, it means no call, and already Justin has learned SO Much for his shifts on call. I think taking that option away from PGY1 is horrible and I hope that they don't pass these changes...it will be interesting to see.

DH can't moonlight until PGY-3, so I didn't check that. However, we are a dual income household.

I have a lot of respect for SAHMs, but I can't imagine not working (unless in school, but even then...)

My husband and I have my income, as he is still in med school, family help and some scholarships. My income is limited, so we are very grateful for the extra help!

Chad can't moonlight at ALL. His schedule is erratic so I can't work. It is rough stuff baby!

We are a dual income family, as we have been since my husband started his training.

He did moonlight during 3rd year of IM residency and 1st and 2nd years of general cardiology fellowship, but not too much (a few nights/weekends a year, more so for tax purposes than anything else).
