Has anyone purchased disability insurance outside of what the residency provides?

Yes, my husband purchased some last year. I don't know that much about it though, I'll have to check with him when he gets home..whenever that is :)

Thank you for sharing your feedback on this! We purchased it last year as well but it's killing our budget... Trying to decide whether to stick with it or not.

We haven't yet, but are seriously looking at a policy now that my DrH is in his final year of residency.

We have considered it too but it was a budget buster. The rates we looked at were based on current income...not projected..and were really rather expensive given my DH's resident salary. I can see that it will make a lot of sense once he's making more money as the rates didn't increase much (dollars a month) even with a sizeable pay increase.
Has anyone found any better policies for resident salaries?

Our rate is about $100/month, and it's based on current income as well. My husband liked the fact that even when he makes policy changes later on he won't have to take another physical etc.

We are currently looking into it (as well as life insurance) but considering the cost it may not be in the budget.

We got it this past year when my husband started as an attending. It is pretty pricey - over $500/month but worth it as it will replace his income if he is hurt. We bought a pretty sizable life insurance policy for him too which is a little over $300 a month. The more you make...the more you spend it seems ;)

A little disability comes with my husband's benefit package. He doesn't qualify for disability insurance so that's all we can get.

We bought a cool mil of Life Insurance. It's only, like $37 per mo.

We have life insurance, but no disability. I'm sure we will get it when we have a real, livable income.

We did, but if you want it, look for something portable if that could be an issue later. M's work provided some but we were able to take advantage of a benefit package allowing us to "upgrade." We weren't going to do it until we learned we could take it with us (although it was expensive when we did.
