After residency

Our very own Jennifer is going to be answering questions about post-residency life with her sweet friend Gretchen. Submit your questions on this post. Or maybe one of you computer geniuses can figure out how to set up a chat either on here, the forum or the Facebook group?

I would be interested in hearing about your retirement planning during medical school, residency, and now during practice and how they differed.

Also hearing about student loan repayment and the change in your relationship (or lack of change) once you go from no money to some (lots?) of money.

And any advice on when to buy a house and/or your experiences with moving during different parts of the medical experience. And your experiences with family planning :)

Gosh I have a lot of questions! Thanks for volunteering to answer!

I have tons of questions! But they are all related with regard to how you settled on the "first" job...

1) How did you decide on a career track (academic, private practice, etc.)? Did the practice model influence the offer you accepted in the end?

2) How much did call schedule factor into the selection process?

3) What were your feelings about relocation?

4) Were you invited to meet with the group was part of the interview process?

5) Is this a job that you can see your husband staying in for a long time or is it just a stepping stone for a bigger move?

6) Were you disappointed by anything with the job offer? Was there anything that you wanted but didn't get?

How did you decide where to live?

Did they offer to help back loans?

How did the job offer process work? Where you having to look, or did they come to you?

What is the schedule REALLY like now?

Thanks for doing this!

My husband loves surgery, 1st year res at OHSU. But he calls every third day for two minutes and says something like, "can't I be a park ranger instead?" I think it's the days when he's not in the OR that really get him down. And only seeing our family when they're asleep. Is this just residency? Or just surgery residency? Or just being a doctor and we need to do some soul searching?
