I attempted the SAHM thing the first year of residency (currently year 2). Staying at home just isn't for me personally, so that is why I went back to work. But...it was also SO hard financially and I wonder how others do it?! I am thinking of staying at home 4th and/or 5th year of residency after hopefully having baby #3 (simply to avoid childcare costs and to prepare for the move). I would LOVE any advice from those of you who have found financial success staying at home. And...how to not feel guilty treating yourself once in awhile :)

@ Beth - when staying at home there is no way to avoid feeling guilty when treating yourself. At least there's not for me!

(If you figure out how to do this please let me know your secret)

I am wearing clothes from high school and drug store make-up.

My nails haven't been painted since I quit my job with Fox TV almost 8 years ago to stay home with my little munchkin. 3 munchkins now.

Staying home was the hard choice for me, but I knew it was the right choice for my kids.

We make it work though sacrifice. Lots and lots of sacrifice. WIC can help with grocery bill. We don't qualify for WIC now, but we did at Chad's previous residency. Growing a vegetable garden. Canning. Buying generic. Asking the grandparents to "sponsor" our kid in baseball.

Eating lots of beans, rice, 83 cent bread from Walmart, making my own biscuits each night.

We are also sacrificing by renting in a stinky neighborhood. The area is good, neighborhood, not so good, but rent can make or break ya!

I love staying at home with my kids, but it requires a ton of sacrifice and very few treats!

I've done everything on that list but school during med school/residency. I was a teacher, I tutor from home online and now I work part time at an tennis and athletic club. I absolutely love my job now (I only work it about 15 hours a week). I work in the nursery, so my almost 3 year old goes everyday with me. We work until noon and then go home for naptime. I have found some great babysitters in my coworksers, I've taken up tennis (indoor) for free, and am going to take advantage of some serious perks of being employed there (free summer camp for my 5 year old among other things). Finding this part time opportunity and always keeping busy is the way I do it and not feel guilty about it. It works for us. :) Good luck with your journey as a SAHM.
