Medical Movies

As a follow up to the post on medical sitcoms, do any of you have medical movies you'd recommend?

I've only seen documentaries (Sicko and Doctor's Diaries on PBS), which are thought provoking and good, but I'd like some lighthearted entertainment, more along the lines of Scrubs or Grey's. Apparently one medical movie is Flatliners, although I've heard it's a bit disturbing.

So, any other ones that are worth checking out? :)

Patch Adams is a must see. Robin Williams plays a med student/resident out to change the world of medicine. Based on a true story. Must See. Some absolutely hilarious stuff mixed in with a good plot. It is more along the lines of the drama of Grey's with a Robin Williams spin.

I'm also being told (from the kitchen where my hubby is doing dishes) that 'Gross Anatomy' is good. As well as one called 'The Doctors'.

I've seen Gross Anatomy but cant recall anything about it. I have not seen 'the doctors.' or maybe i have and just dont remember.

A good drama to watch is "The Doctor", with William Hurt. He's a know-it-all of a doctor that suddenly gets cancer and finds out what it's like to be the patient. It also stars Mandy Patinkin and Adam Arkin, which is probably why I liked it so much. It came out in 1991, according to IMDB.com. Wow. I'd forgotten how old it is!
One movie that I've always liked that's kind of medical related, but involved physical/occupational therapy more than anything is "Regarding Henry" with Harrison Ford and Annette Bening. May not be what your looking for, but after watching it, I wanted to be a physical therapist for a long time (which never happened). It's got a great, feel good ending. Those are the only two "medical" type of movies I can think of at the moment. I'm a movie buff, though, so I may comment later with more.

I'm really going to date myself, but Awakenings is an old film based on Oliver Sacks' book (I believe by the same name). Sacks also wrote a book "the Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" which I read over and over again. My husband introduced me to this author (and physician). Fascinating true stories.

Something the Lord Made is a good one. It's more about Vivian Thomas but he helped Dr. Alfred Blalock pioneer modern heart surgery. It's an HBO film and it's good.
