Reader Question: After Residency Relocation Search

Please give this reader some helpful advice!

My husband and I are currently looking for a place to truly call home after residency. We are looking at the Carolinas and Georgia, Ohio, and California. How do we go about visiting these places? Do hospitals provide traveling expenses to visit? What areas should we look into within these states? Any ideas will help!

From A Doctors Wife said...: I am no expert in this area, but I understand that during the interview process they typically pay for your travel, lodging, etc. And perhaps if you are a serious candidate may pay for an additional trip to finalize your decision. But before the actual applying and interviewing process you are on your own dime if you want to visit and check out the locations. I would stick to doing research online and then apply only at jobs your husband will love. If he doesn't like the hospital/practice he is at, it will matter very little where you live.; August 17, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Beth Hollenbeck said...: I recommend Greenville, SC! My husband is a 4th yr ortho surg resident at Greenville Hospital System and we absolutely love it here. The hospital (Greenville Hospital System) is wonderful, the cost of living is great, weather is amazing. Greenville is very family friendly with lots to do, great culture and is close to the mountains and a 3 hour drive to the beach. Rissy Roo said...: Our experience has been that recruiters set up the job interviews and/or you do. Its hit or miss if the hospital/practice you are interviewing with will pay for travel expenses. Most likely they will pay for a nice dinner out with the partners and a day of touring the hospital/facilities, lunch with people etc.; August 17, 2011 at 11:15 PM

Wendy said...: My husband had his first interview solo and I was invited to accompany him for second interviews. They set us up with a realtor and also had interviews set up for me as well so that I could have an idea of local job prospects.

I would recommend waiting for him to interview before spending money out of your pocket to scope out areas in advance. Depending on the job market in his specialty, you may not have many options in the areas that you listed...

Disclaimer - We didn't wind up where we wanted to be geographically. Neither did many of my husband's co-fellows. The ones that did wind up where they wanted to be secured their jobs in advance of starting fellowship.; August 20, 2011 at 3:24 PM

lisa h. said...: We spent 8 yrs in Columbus OH (at OSU) for med school and a 4yr residency, we LOVED OSU. We're now in FL. We would move back to Ohio if we got the chance. There are lots of areas around...we lived in Upper Arlington (7 min from downtown Columbus, great schools, great community). It breaks my heart we aren't there anymore.; December 16, 2011 at 4:03 PM
