Thanks from a reader

Anonymous reader wrote the following nice message:

I recently found your blog and I've really enjoyed it and found a lot of solace in reading the posts and comments.

I'm not exactly a doctor's wife, but my husband was/is pre-med. We have two children, a two year old and a one year old. He just graduated and is currently in the application mode. I almost feel that I have already been put through the ringer with his career choice. Our oldest child was born with a rare and terminal brain defect called Holoprosencephaly, she was given 8 weeks to live and now is going on three years old. Our son was born last summer, when he was supposed to be taking the MCAT and applying to med school, hence why he is doing it this summer.

Ironically, I've been doing all this by myself, raising the babies, dealing with our daughters medical issues, therapist, insurance etc... and now that he's home this summer I feel that we have more tension between us. Its like I don't know how to make him fit into our day to day lives. We hope to learn a lot from this year he is on "a break". I'm going back to school this semester and seeing if I can finish some general requirements before he starts with school again. We're trying to build our family unit up so that we are able to handle it when daddy has to be gone again.

Undergrad was really challenging for us, two kids, special needs, medical issues, my husband leaving from 7 am to midnight every day except Sunday. I'm hoping it was a sort of boot camp for what the rest of our lives might look like.

I really appreciate all that has been posted, everyone's honest feelings and contributions. I can't tell you how some of the posts helped my marriage and my understanding of what he goes through. Currently I think he's getting a taste of what I have been going through and I hope this is what ultimately makes our marriage stronger!

Thanks for your blog, I just want you ladies to know that your helping our little family know how to support daddy with a righteous calling!!

OK, whatever I have complained about in the past, I take it all back. I'm glad you find this blog seemingly early in the process. And it sounds like you already have an idea of what you are in for. I can't imagine doing that and dealing with a serious illness in your family. One of those things alone is hard on a family, but both. My heart goes out to you. Welcome and I hope you find comfort here, I know I have.

Anonymous, From my experience of being married in Medical school and now the beginning of Residency it sounds like you've already been living it. Like WifeofaResident said, I think you and your husband have already survived one of the hardest things any couple could sustain. But, also those hours sounded exceptionally long and props to you for all you've done to keep your family together. My hubby went to C. of Wooster (not ivy league but, a better private undergrad)and then recieved his Masters of Pysical Therapy at Ohio State and he said that medical school has been many times harder. Just being honest here and maybe you already know this. I think our saving grace (and true for more than one family we know) was that he did an Independent Study Pathway. I wish I could advise you on different schools that offer this but, only know of his LECOM which is DO so it may not be somewhere he would apply. But, if he isn't already I would seriously look into schools that offer PBL or ISP pathways as they allow a little more flex time. The other thing that has gotten me through is having a group of women who's hubbies are students and residents that meets regularly. It helps me to remember that our struggles aren't unique. I will pray that you have lots of love and endurance for the long road you have ahead. :-) Good Luck!

Well, I posted back in August about how my husband was applying to med school, we have two kids, our daughter is special needs etc.. I really appreciate finding this blog and reading past posts and of course these comments as well. Well, an update, my husband was just accepted into medical school in the midwest. A lot has transpired in these last 5 months and we are just over the moon about his news. Although it means another big move, we know this is the right path. I just wanted to thank you all for your comments and I would love to see more of you posts or blogs!
