Unknown said...: We pay $1375 for a 1700 sq ft 3-bedroom on a golf course. We'll be moving in April for rotations though. I'll be sad to leave, but my mom's best friend is offering her house for rent. It's a 2700 sq ft. 4-bedroom with a pool on an acre lot and she's going to rent it to us for cheap. Amanda E. said...: We live in a townhome built in 2003 in downtown Indianapolis. It is a 2 bedroom/1.5 bathroom with a 3rd story large loft area, a total of 1700 sq. ft. Indy is SUCH a cheap place when it comes to real estate. We have private financing and pay a grand total of $620/month (principal & interest only)!!; September 20, 2010 at 8:59 PM

Here goes nothing!

We pay 1321 for a 550 square foot studio apartment in an area just outside the city. It's a wealthy area so it's city prices but it's also a very safe area so we pay more for peace of mind I suppose. That and we have one car and it's one of the few areas I can live life without a car since the husband rotates through several hospitals all over NYC and Long Island.

I can't imagine paying more just for a wall to call a bedroom.

I've also looked into real estate here and a 2 bedroom apartment runs around 500,000.

We paid less in our old state but it was a wonderful town in the mountains with lots to do and beautiful views. Our place for med school is bigger and actually has a yard but I'd take a smaller place in a more desirable city any day.

Free water and sewer though, no extra storage unit to pay for and free lawn care. Comes out pretty close to even.

Keely said...: This is my favorite post ever. I always feel like we are the only ones getting robbed blind. Last year we got a "deal" on a 2 br, 700 sq ft apartment at $1,656. Then when our 12 months was up they said we had to pay the normal price of $2,300. Are they on drugs??? We could hardly eat with the rent as is.

When we moved we gotreally lucky. We are paying $1,100 for a tiny little place. I'm pretty sure we live in the cheapest place in a 30 mile radius. It's small, old, and quarky...but it's in a great little town and I can afford to buy a shirt from TJMax every now and then without blowing the budget.

Westchester County for you. Yuck. I long for match day when it says "some place cheap" but you know it's going to say "Manhattan, the one place more expensive than where you are now."

Colleen said...: We built our house here in rural/suburban North Fort Worth, TX when Ben started med school at TCOM so we are starting our 4th year in it. We pay $1200+ for a 3000 sq feet, 2 story 4brdm/2.5 bath, very generic, nothing customized house with a cul-de-sac lot.

However, I pay our mortgage and most of our bills with the money I bring in from my home preschool. Plus, I have the added relief of not having to pay for child care for our 2 boys.

We may be staying here for Residency. I hope this happens because we can stay in our house until (hopefully) the market improves. I think we won't make much profit when we sell because the housing market here is REALLY bad. There are at least 10 houses for sale or being foreclosed on in my neighborhood right now.

I feel a little guilty because we don't struggle as hard as other med student families do, but it is just that things aren't as expensive here, my job fits our situtaion very well, and we still qualify for government assistance, so that helps a LOT!!; September 22, 2010 at 2:17 PM
m said...: we pay $1,300/month in rent includes yard care/snow removal. Doesn't include utilities. 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath around 1500 sq feet. 1 car garage. Living in Pennsylvania everything is kind of pricey unless you want to live in the scary neighborhoods.; September 22, 2010 at 7:46 PM
