Amazing timing of this question.

Last week, DrH not only cut himself on a used "safety" scalpel, but also saw a demented patient who, after being examined, told him he had TB.

Thankfully, blood tests came back clean, and we found out the demented guy had actually been treated.

Fun times in the household!

DH (during MSIII) was scrubbed into a case on urology rotation and was observing. Resident asked him to come hold something, and without anyone thinking (he had on no mask or goggles) he did what he was asked to do and was splashed in the eyes with the contents of the patients bladder...a patient who was known HIV+. So he spent the remainder of his surgical rotation on antiretrovirals and was terribly ill for the entire 8 weeks. But thank goodness for those medications. His first 2 tests have come back negative thank God. From now on, no matter what, I constantly ask him if he is wearing goggles and a mask.

Twice during medical school. The pain of the required 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 year testing follow ups after each stick was a deciding factor that he didn't really want patient contact, pushing him into radiology.

How about being cut with the knife??!! Happened for the fist time a couple of weeks ago. My husband is a PGY4 in gen surgery and this was the first time anything like this happened. I feel blessed that the patient was a general surgery patient in for a gall bladder removal and was a healthy individual. My hubby does a lot of trauma and that would have scared both of us a lot more I'm sure. He was safe this time, but did bring all of the scares into reallity.

Hey Shana-My hubby also cut himself on the "safety" scalpel. I guess they hate those things...

Yep... With a used EMG needle from a high-risk patient (drug user). Was really worried, but luckily the patient tested clean, so now we just have to mess with the red tape of workers comp. (the hospital he was working at checked him out, but keeps billing us. Seriously?)

It was sooo nerve-wracking waiting for those results. Each time he got tested, I'd get knots in my tummy.
