Graduation Present...

Happy Monday/President's Day!!

Well, graduation from Medical School is fast approaching, (a little over 3 months away, eeek) and I'm trying to come up with some ideas for the greatest med school gift, ever! If it were up to him he would want a 4o-something inch flat screen TV (with HD) and stuff. Being a girl, I just don't see the correlation between a flat screen TV and graduating Medical School, but like I said, I'm a girl. I want to get him something personal and meaningful, maybe even something to do with his future as a surgeon. Have any of you seen/heard anything neat and thought.."PERFECT!"?? I'm really open to any suggestions/ideas and hopefully this can help out a few of us!

I got a really nice OSU-CHS diploma frame and I got his Christian DO Oath framed as well. I know it's super lame, but it's what he wanted, he didn't really need anything else, and it was practical.

He loves food, so we also went out to a Japanese steak house as well.

Some of the people we graduated with gave things like, PDAs, GPS systems, TV's, trips (ie. hunting, skiing, fishing) and some gave guns and bows! I think making it personal or what they want is the most important.

We went cheap due to budget and hope to go on a vacation once we have been in practice for a while.

My husband hasn't graduated yet, but I have to say the two presents he hasn't EVER stopped talking about are the year I got him an iPod and the year I bought him a flat screen. Two best presents ever. Of course, technology is his "thing"... Whenever I get him stuff *I* think he'll appreciate, I'm usually wrong! LOL... so you might need to hint around.

When Brad got his MBA, I let him buy a '67 Cougar he was begging for. It needed a lot of work so I thought it would be a fun outlet for him. Huge disaster. Way too much money has gone into fixing it and we had to leave it in OK because there is no room for extra cars in Philly. Anyone in OK want a sweet looking blue Cougar? :o)

My mom got him a clock from here:

We get more compliments/comments etc on this thing! It is soooo much fun. She got it for his "office" when he gets one so patients can be distracted by it, but we might have to get him a new one because I don't want to lose this one!

When Chad graduated from Med School the kids gave him a bag of suckers (because real doctors give out suckers).

I got him a bicycle. Kind of a "Welcome to residency" sort a present : )

It's actually been quite useful.

Howdy to my fellow OK friends! WOW! I REALLY miss Oklahoma.

Well, I still have a little over a year before graduation, but I know my husband would also love a new gigantic TV. Why are men so in to that stuff?
Here are some ideas I've been pondering....
- Professional nameplate for the doctor desk
- Mont Blanc pen with his name engraved
- A fabulous vacation (but who can afford that?)
- Medical Bookends
- A REALLY nice watch with Dr. ??? engraved on back
- Something that goes along with their hobby... photography = a nice DSLR Camera
- Have a quilt made out of all of his old Med School t-shirts/sweatshirts
- A doctor's bag full of new equipment
- Med School Memories Scrapbook (this has been a work in progress since Day 1)
- A nice leather portfolio (Scully or Bosca?)
- Briefcase (Tumi?)

I also hope to host a really nice party where we get to celebrate him and his accomplishments. Ok.. now I'm getting excited and graduation can't possibly come soon enough. C'mon 2011!!!
= )

Money was tight and we were able to start a long-distance marriage, so I gave myself a $75 limit. I found one of those metal sculptures made out of recycled parts of a radiologist. My husband loved it... something for his future office, and certainly related to his career choice.

I agree that it should be absolutely personalized...and something he can enjoy! My husband is an avid golfer, and since we were moving to Florida for residency, I got him a personalized golf bag, and his family gave him money toward new clubs.

Does the car run Melisa? Is it in good working order? How much?

So funny! My husband also wanted a big tv REAL bad. I ended up getting him a really good stethoscope and an antique doctor's bag. He liked them both, but that dang tv kept coming up in conversation until he finally got it. I'd give in to the tv and do something creative like engrave the side of it or something.

Now it's been years since graduation, but my husband recently took on a new role. I had a walking stick hand-carved by a local artist. A snake winds up the staff (following a caduceus theme) and it is laughing (because that's just Mark... he has a contageous laugh). He loved it and now displays it in his office.

I actually didn't get him anything "from me" but we gave him a poem that I had mounted. Technically, it was from our daughter who was 9 months old when he graduated. (It's the poem about how when daddy signs his name the MD stands for "My Daddy")

We couldn't justify an expensive gift. We both knew how tight things were going to get after he graduated, so we just couldn't spend tons of money on a grad present.

Christy, We have that poem too! One of our friends cross-stitched it and framed it for Mark for graduation. We love that poem.

go for the vacation. if you have a drop of med school loans left, do it. we don't have kids yet, and we're going to europe... his first trip. my 25th birthday, his 25th birthday, med school graduation (a year early, since he has 3 weeks off in betwen MSIII and MSIV and who knows if he has time off at all between IV and intern year)... we found deeply discounted flights and are staying in budget hotels/hostels and sleeping on trains. it's still pricey, but once we have a family and he starts residency, we won't be able to do it! if you have a family, maybe ask in-laws or friends to take the kids for a long weekend and take him to a super relaxing or adventure vacation... you can find lots of deals on travelzoo.com... even a weekend at a b&b with a hiking trip (usually free in state parks) can be super great.
