Lives of Doctor Wives: Suzanne (Mrs.D)

Suzanne (Mrs.D)

Hello everyone!
My husband is a first year resident in Internal Medicine. We moved to Cleveland a couple of months ago from Rochester (and I know some med students who are still in Rochester, if anyone is applying there). Both sets of parents live far away, we have no kids and no pets, and I work from home. It's been interesting to deal with this big change in our lives without much of a support system nearby. I found this forum shortly after I started my own blog, and it's so nice to have a community of people all going through the same thing! I've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts so much - and checking out some of the other ladies' blogs.

Welcome! We moved from KS to SC and left all of our friends and family. But, the wonderful group of people (wives) in our program has been amazing. We meet at least once a week and have a family outing with everyone from all 5 years once a month. It has saved me and helped me adjust very quickly. Are you able to get together with other wives on a consistent basis? It is as if they are my interim family and seeing them often has been the key. Best wishes to you as you continue to get settled!

Thank you all!

@Beth - that is a great suggestion. I have gotten to know a couple of wives, but our hubbies are usually on call different days. At least so far, we've all been reluctant to give up those rare nights we have with the husbands!

@Kelly - yes U of R.

Welcome to Cleveland! My fiance is MSIII at Case. I'm here part time and I really do like the city (in the spring-fall, I don't really like winters).

My husband is starting the U of R's post-bacc program in June and would love love love to go their med school eventually. We live in Canandaigua so it would be ideal. We have 4 kids and both of our families are in the area. What are your thoughts on the school? Thanks!

@Kelly - My husband's med school experience was wonderful. The professors seem to be really open and friendly. The advisory panel is really helpful (he got excellent suggestions and coaching from the residency adviser). And he got tons of hands-on experience starting the first year. One of the things that differentiates U of R from some other med schools (at least this is my understanding) is that you get to start seeing patients right away. My husband would work in outpatient clinics - preceptorships - for months at a time, and learned how to do physicals and histories and all that good stuff. This was in conjunction with the course work. From a spouse's perspective, I got to see him a good amount of time. Especially during fourth year. Plus, the school - and the surrounding hospitals - are all in pretty good areas. We lived in a nice suburban area 5 minutes from Strong Memorial Hospital. I'm happy to give you more info - just email me at lifeofadoctorswife@gmail.com.
