Shoes!

My hubby just started his MSIII surgery rotation and the standing all day is new and tough to him. What do you or your husbands recommend for footwear? (Note: most days he's required to dress up and they don't provide him with a locker to keep alternate clothes/shoes--are there any comfortable dress shoes?) Did your hubbys ever do compression socks? Any suggestions would be helpful!!

Maybe try some inserts and see if that helps at all. Hubby had the same issue but after the first week his legs and feet got used to it and he didn't even use the inserts that we bought anymore. Keep in mind that if he's not going to go into surgery than buying a whole new special pair of shoes might be a waste.

My husband recently bought a pair of Naot clogs to wear as a surgical intern. He likes the ease of stepping in and out of them, and they have been very comfortable so far.

Dansko Professionals all the way. His feet never hurt, even after a long day of standing in the OR. They have been able to withstand 2 years of blood and plaster and are still comfortable and in good condition. He has a pair of Dansko Oscars that were supposed to for clinic days but they're not as good as the professionals so he usually wears his Cole Haans for clinic. I think that Danskos are worth every penny. I have a pair as well and while I don't use them to operate, I love them just the same.

My husband ordered a pair of the RX Crocs online. They really aren't any different, but he has loved them. He is going into surgery (Ortho to be exact) but is a fourth year med student right now. He is doing an ortho rotation. Anyway, he wears his crocs everyday for surgery because he can through them in a bucket of bleach after being int he OR all day. He looked at a couple different options (the ones mentioned above) but he has big feet, size 13 and so most weren't available in his size. He loves the Crocs though and would recommend them highly!

Good question! My husband would wear crocs for surgery - but when he was on interal medicine and on his feet in dress shoes all day he bought the dr. schols (spelling?) gel inserts.

We'll have to look into compression socks or the Dansko professionals for residency!

My BF is a MSIV and swears by his Merrill Passports. He has two pairs in brown and black. He just got done with surg onc rotation requiring 10-12 hr surgery cases and praises his shoes for his survival. He loved them for the floors too when he was on other rotations. They are harder to find but Cabellas and many shoe outlets have them. He hasn't done compression socks or anything like that. He tries to change his socks every 8 hours if possible.
