Poll

I put up a new poll for us to discuss next week.

So, any comments on the old poll about going into medicine yourself?

I chose the 'I can't stand the sight of blood', but that isn't entirely true. It isn't blood that bothers me, it is seeing people screaming and in pain. Ahhh! I seriously CANNOT watch ER, or Grey's (for many reasons LOL!), or pretty much any medical drama with people screaming while their arm is dangling off. Give me a nice surgery channel with people knocked out cold, and I'll be fine.

Julie @ Bunsen Burner Bakery said...: I regret not going into medicine. I made the decision to go into research and get a Ph.D. because I couldn't stomach the thought of going into so much debt. Now, I have all the debt from my husband... and no medical degree.

For what I want to do, it would have been far easier for me to go to medical school, get an M.D., and focus on research, as opposed to a 6-7 year Ph.D. with a dissertation. My advisor is an MD, and continually tells me that I've taken the hard way. Sigh.; July 22, 2009 at 12:09 PM
Mrs. Dawkter said...: I wish I could stomach it - simply because I think a career in medicine (speaking more broadly them M.D.s) is so valuable and will always be in demand! But I would be grossed out every day... not to mention I don't think I could have gotten through the schooling, physics and chem just don't come easy to me! Tasha said...: I've always wanted to go to med school, so my compromise is PA school (which starts in three weeks!). Far less debt, less time, and more flexible for when we have kids. And now that we've been through a couple of years of med school, I'm glad that I'm not putting myself through it too.; July 23, 2009 at 6:26 AM
JLee said...: I'm a RN and I had nightmares about med school when my husband was studying for the MCAT. I wanted more time with patients and less debt! The Plunks said...: I'm also an RN and considered medical school but since my fiance (now husband) had already chosen that path I knew one of us had to have a less demanding schedule for our family. I love the flexibility in my job and after seeing my husband's schedule I know I couldn't be away from my baby that often.; July 23, 2009 at 11:25 PM
Amanda said...: I left education and went into the medical field, but on the clerical side of it. I was a receptionist in a couple of medical offices before we had our son. I liked learning about medicine in that capacity, but after watching my husband go through what he went through, I don't think I'd want to be a doctor. Besides, I couldn't take advanced biology in high school because I knew I wouldn't be able to dissect a cat!; July 23, 2009 at 11:48 PM
Behrmans said...: Eric has had to have some stitches removed on 3 different occasions due to moles. Guess who he wanted to remove the stitches. Yep, me! The first three, I thought I was going to lose everything I had eaten. I told him to go back to the Doctor but financially it was no cost for us so I stuck it up and removed them. The second time, was no big deal.

I love Grey’s. The blood in the show doesn’t bother me but in real life it’s a different story.
