Polls

Any comments on last week's poll about how this year is going so far. We are nearing the end of the first month, want to change your vote? ;o)

I picked that it is going great because, hey, I'm living with my hubby again! LOL!

Sorry to bring up sore subjects Stacie, but I'm curious how many others are in the same boat. From the comments, it seems you are not alone in the 'wrong specialty' situation.

So far so good! My DH is PGY1 in a surgical intern year, but so far he's only had a month of radiology--he says it feels like he's still on vacation! The real deal begins next week. No more waking up together and having dinner right on time together. Fingers crossed. I feel more prepared and hopeful than I did a month ago.

This week is the last day of my husbands "break". He took the Clinical Skills portion of Step 2 last week (along with his schools CS or CCX as they call it) and today he takes the Clinical Knowlege portion of Step 2. Then he starts his away rotation on Monday (which there goes seeing him for the next three months).

I think this depends if you are asking how the year is going based on a work standpoint, or based on an overall happiness/marriage standpoint.

My husband is LOVING this year (PGY2 Radiology) in comparison to his intern year. So for him, from a professional standpoint, it is a huge improvement.

Of course, the downside is that we now live apart for ~2 years until I finish my Ph.D. And we both absolutely loathe the travel back and forth (I hate hate hate Greyhound but he took the car with him so I don't have one now), but also don't want to fall into a pattern of going months without seeing each other. So, from a general life standpoint, this year has more or less hit bottom for us.

My husband is still in med school, but right now he is on his ortho rotation, 1 of 2 for the year and he loves it! Which has been really comforting. At least I know that he doesn't absolutely hate what he is hoping to go into! I made him promise not to change his mind in first year...Hopefully that is a promise he can keep! Good luck to those of you who have had that unfortunate experience!

I didn't know how to answer--my hubby did NOT pass his first step boards, which means he dropped out of his surgery rotation to study and take it before his next scheduled rotation. Neither of us are thrilled at the idea of studying 24/7 again, paying another $500 for the exam, and no breaks for the next two years to make up for the rotation he dropped. He didn't pass by 3 points... So I guess for us the 'new' year hasn't yet started.

This first year is going good so far. Tommy is really enjoying what he is doing, OB/GYN and some surgeries this month, the schedule has been nice and his on call night he was super busy with no sleep! He got to do his first all ALONE delivery, the other resident and attending were in a C-section and it was just him and a nurse. 9lb baby, he was lucky everything went so smooth and was totally pumped. Grant, Morgan, and I are spending our time painting, drywalling, cleaning, unpacking and enjoying the weather before it gets any colder here. It will be so nice to soon have the house put together more so we can get back on a schedule and start doing more activites around town. Tommy is loving the program and all 4 of the new resident families are having a great time together, it's nice to have that support even if I'm the on wife in the program.

Hy just found your blog. My boyfriend studies medicine so I still don´t enter into the doctor wive´s cattegory but I hope some day I will. He just finiched his internship and he wants to study later Neumology. I really love that my boyfriend is a doctor (since I was like 3 I always said that I will marry a doctor someday) but I know that it´s a very time consuming career.
I just became a follower of your blog so I can start to have an idea of what my life is going to be someday lol

My DH is doing a fellowhip in cardiothoracic after a 5 year residency in General Surgery, Our expectations going in to this were that it would be better (no trauma call, no up every 4th night operating for 24 hours straight, etc, etc). Well, it's not better, it's worse but in a different way. His calls are ok, he's only had to spend the night in the hospital once, but we're lucky if he gets home before 11pm every night. We have zero time together except for every other weekend. It's an adjustment.

So far our PGY-4 year is going exactly as PGY-5. Busy! He's also been interviewing for pain management fellowships, and hopefully we will know what we will doing next year sometime in the next month. He has been picking up as many extra moonlighting shifts as possible to make up for the months that he will be away on rotation or unable to do Trauma backup. This sucks because it means he has about 3-4 days off a month. YUCK. Funny, even with that--it's not like we are seeing him more or less...it's just normal routine.
